PS3 (I have decided to only post this from my old site...)

Ok i just spent a weekend with m ps3,
and damn i am tired...
now normally i would be burnt out from playing games and stuff
but no
I went the extra mile
tryed to install linux!
now for those ready to take the plunge on that...
first: setting up the ps3 to install linux is super easy there are prompts to do the partitioning
and to boot the cd
now that brings me to
Second: the "otheros.self" and the "otheros.bld" files must be loaded onto your usb key/memory stick (cf, sd, ms pro) USING A WIN MACHINE DO NOT USE A MAC (the mac adds something to the file that corrupts them.
Third: once you load that and boot into th linus boot (another simple step) it boots from the cd
now the distro you pick is important as to your knowledge of linux
Yellowdog: simple install and simple usage but it doesn seem to offer much in the way of multimedia (I am working on that) and installing updates using yum is default off for some reason(!) you have to edit a config file (ask me which i forget right now) to get it to work. I did find Enlightenment 17 a little unstable and went to Gnome (and later KDE by accident).
I havent had the time yet to install any rpms but YUM is supposed to find all the dependencies.
now after finding my limits and instability in Yellowdog I switched to a Gentoo install after reading THIS.
Gentoo: A FRIGGIN NIGHTMARE TO INSTALL
Took hours with me and John adding all the lines to the config files manually during install
there is no way this is newbie friendly.
and after hours we still got stuff wrong that wasnt covered in the Gentoo step by step,
and the manual compiling JESUS H CHRIST! windows is faster install then just compiling the tarball.
Then having to hunt down and manually rewrite some config files had me and John just deciding that Yellowdog wasn that bad at all.
as a matter of fact after hunting down and rewriting a few of the files I still couldnt get it to work!
So,
I am currently reinstalling Yellowdog...
John gave up and went home.
I will fiddle with this and let you know whats what with this.
(also the gentoo install did have some nice video settings, it offered, manually of course, me the chance to set it up to display in 480p, 568p, 720p, 1080i, it looked damn nice but i couldnt take it anymore...)
so there you have it.
Hopefully my next post will be about playing a game or something.
Maybe watching a nice Blu Ray movie :)
